We worked with VINCI Construction UK Ltd, Tameside Council and Transport for Greater Manchester to contribute to the redevelopment of Ashton-under-Lyne’s old bus station into a modern transport interchange. As well as offering a gateway to the town, the project made it much easier to change between different types of transport, like trams and buses. The new interchange was being built on the site of the existing Ashton Bus Station and included a covered concourse and seated waiting area; a ticket and information outlet and retail facilities; electronic passenger information including bus, Metrolink and rail; information screens; accessible toilets, baby changing and Changing Places facilities; secure cycle parking with a cycle hub; enhanced passenger security including CCTV and improved taxi facilities.
From January 2019 to July 2020, we supplied and installed 41 new street lighting columns, 60 new signs and bollards, 19 SolarLite Flush Mounted Road Studs, 51 new DNO connections and all associated groundworks, including 300m of PCN cabling. We also carried out the removal of 150 signs and 31 columns.
We supplied, installed, commissioned, and delivered luminaires with the Philips (Signify) CityTouch CMS system, providing the client full visibility and control of the street lighting from a centralised dashboard, to securely monitor light points, set schedules, and adjust light levels on demand.
This was an incredibly challenging project in terms of the location and time constraints. The site was a busy town centre location, and the existing infrastructure and transport network had to remain usable during the works. This meant the works were completed in several phases, sometimes at nights and weekends.
We were appointed at quite a late stage, meaning that the lead times for materials had to be managed very closely, and temporary works had to be put in place to allow road users to continue to use the area during construction.
On completion of the project, Nick Parkinson, VINCI Construction UK Ltd.’s Project Manager (Building Division) commented “I worked with Altitude on our Tameside Interchange project in 2019/2020. Vinci appointed Altitude to provide street lighting, traffic signs, associated electrical works and DNO connections. The Altitude team was a pleasure to deal with, reliable and co-operative from the start. The project was carried out in several phases around a busy transport interchange, so we needed our trades to be flexible and punctual, Altitude did not disappoint, often carrying out works at short notice to maintain the programme, even switching to night shifts when required, and completing works that were not originally in their scope to avoid delays. The works were completed safely and to a high standard, on time and within budget.”
