Lighting the Way: Accessible Crossing Upgrade at New Islington Marina in Manchester

Accessible Ashton Canal Crossing Upgrade in Manchester

After months of improvement works, a permanent, step-free crossing now links New Islington Green to the marina, replacing the restrictive Grade II lock bridge that hindered pedestrian and cyclist access. With the area’s growing population, Manchester City Council prioritised this upgrade to maintain strong transport connections and improve accessibility for people with disabilities. The new crossing features a widened path, non-slip surface and lighting to enhance safety and deter antisocial behaviour.

The route provides safe cycling and pedestrian access to the City Centre, complementing the Northern Quarter corridor with two traffic-free paths parallel to the Inner Ring Road, designed to improve air quality and attract broader use.

The Ashton Canal Bridge supports Manchester City Council’s clean air and sustainable transport goals by promoting active travel and reducing reliance on cars. It reflects a sector-wide shift toward accessible, socially valuable, and resilient public spaces. As New Islington grows, the bridge will be a vital link between homes, retail and transport, driving urban regeneration across east Manchester.

Works carried out by Altitude:

  • Supplied and installed feeder pillar to supply all the new lighting throughout the bridge which includes new distribution board, control switch gear controlling remote LED drivers within the feeder pillar through a smart solar time switch.
  • Installation of the newly designed containment system.
  • Installation of 157metres of LED was installed into the handrail, with 10 seamless connection points.
  • 2 sections of wall wash lighting was installed.
  • 12 under bridge lights were installed to illuminate the underside of the bridge.

The lighting contract was delivered on budget with an improved programme, following successful negotiations to secure earlier LED delivery dates. Between September 2024 and May 2025, in depth design consultations were held with the client’s Contract Manager and key suppliers to address project buildability and refine the installation approach.

Cable containment was originally outside our scope of works. However, following on from site discussions and a subsequent meeting with A E Yates, concerns were raised regarding responsibility and execution. As a result, we were formally tasked with delivering the containment. The initial design provided was unfeasible, presenting significant installation challenges. To resolve this, we developed an alternative containment system and constructed a 2.5metre physical mock-up to present to the architect and Manchester City Council. Our revised design was reviewed and approved for installation.

On site works commenced in May 2025, led by our dedicated in-house team consisting of a Project Manager, three electricians and one apprentice.

Collaborative Working

We worked collaboratively with our trusted suppliers Total Steel (steel and balustrades) and Fagerhult (LED lighting), engaging closely on design development and technical coordination. These partnerships have fostered strong working relationships that we are now carrying forward into upcoming projects.
